SCARAB RACING TEAM

The cars are designed and built by Dubois Racing in Belgium with emphasis on low cost and reliability. The bodywork is manufactured from Glass Reinforced Plastic(GRP)sectional panels for ease of repair, including front spoiler and rear wing for extra down-force and stability

The Car

GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS

Built to a single specification. The Beetle-Style bodies sit on a tubular steel chassis powered by an 1800cc, 130BHP VW/AUDI engine - mid mounted for optimum balance. They are quick too - since weighing only 760Kg, they have superb power to weight ratio. Above all, safety is vitally important. That is why each car comes with an oversized roll cage, a five point drivers harness, a petrol tank that complies with standards set by the FIA and Uniroyal Rain Sport tyres that give excellent handling, especially in the wet

NEW FOR 2009 - DIESEL ENGINE

New and exciting to the Scarab Racing set-up for 2009, is the introduction of the TDI engine. The turbocharged direct injection, more commonly known as the TDI, is a modern turbocharged diesel engine produced by Volkswagen. The actual car is the same as a petrol engine Fun Cup car, with the exception of a VW TDI diesel engine. The new engine is environmentally friendly with the new power plant being a 1900cc TDI, 160 bhp, VW diesel engine that produces approximately 30 % less pollution and a staggering 40 % less noise.

WARNING - TECHNICAL BIT

The engine uses direct injection, where a fuel injector sprays atomised fuel directly into the main combustion chamber of each cylinder. The engine is coupled with a turbocharger to increase the amount of air, which can move into the engine cylinders and an intercooler to lower the temperature. Therefore, this makes the density of the air from the turbo larger, which increases the amount of fuel that can be injected and combusted. These, in combination, allow for greater engine performance, due to the more complete combustion. At the same time, it decreases emissions and provides more torque than its petrol engine counterpart.

Added to this, the reduced material volume of the direct injection diesel engine minimises heat losses, and therefore increases engine efficiency, at the expense of increased combustion noise.

Another advantage of the TDI diesel engine is a feature, which is commonly known as the diesel particulate filter. It is a device, which removes diesel particulate matter, i.e. dirt and soot, from the exhaust of the car, which leads to no visible smoke from the exhausts.

HANDLING

Suspension can be adjusted for camber, toe-in (or toe-out). Many of the suspension parts are from production cars to keep down costs.

Brakes are race derived for great efficiency and a long life (Handy for stopping as well). The whole rear section of the car from B-Pillar backwards hinges to allow fast access to the engine compartment. The remaining panels are mounted to the chassis with snap-lock fasteners, with the exception of the front spoiler which is held in place with several screw fasteners.

SUB-SYSTEMS

The chassis is constructed with tubular steel, the seat is centrally located within the car, giving excellent central weight distribution with the engine housed just behind the drivers seat. the fuel tank is positioned just behind the front axle, with access for refueling via an entry on top of the bonnet. Teams refuel their own cars using specially approved dry-break dump cans and sealed couplings for maximum safety
